Understanding Segments

What Are Segments?

Segments are smart groups of contacts based on rules you define. Unlike static groups, segments update automatically:

Static — doesn't changeDynamic — updates automatically

Good to Know

Think of segments as saved searches. Define the criteria once, and the segment always shows the contacts that match — even new ones added later.

Creating a Segment

1

Go to Segments

Click Segments in the sidebar.

2

Click New Segment

Give it a descriptive name, like “Enterprise Contacts” or “Gmail Users”.

3

Add rules

Set conditions that contacts must match. Preview matching contacts to verify your rules.

4

Save

Your segment is ready to use in campaigns and A/B tests.

Define rules to target the right contacts automatically

Rules and Filters

Each rule has three parts: field, operator, and value.

FieldOperators
Emailcontains, equals, starts with, ends with
Namecontains, equals, starts with
Companycontains, equals, starts with
Pro Tip

Add multiple rules to narrow your audience. All rules must match (AND logic), so more rules = smaller, more targeted segment.

Using Segments

Segments can be used in two places:

  • Campaigns — Automatically enroll matching contacts into drip sequences
  • A/B Tests — Target a specific audience for your tests

Drip Campaigns

Use segments to power your automated email sequences

A/B Testing

Target specific segments for your tests

Segment Ideas

By Company

Rule: “company equals Acme Inc” — Target all contacts at a specific company for account-based campaigns.

By Email Domain

Rule: “email ends with @gmail.com” — Segment personal vs. business email users.

Internal Team

Rule: “email contains @yourcompany.com” — Send internal updates only to your team.

Best Practices

Keep segments focused

Create specific segments rather than broad ones. “Enterprise SaaS contacts” is better than “all business contacts” for targeted messaging.

Preview before using

Always preview matching contacts when creating a segment to make sure your rules are correct before launching a campaign.
